HRH The Princess Royal, Patron of the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS), delivered a speech on the importance of sports for students and inducted members into the BUCS Hall of Fame.
On Wednesday 5th of June, 4 Birkbeck representatives attended the British Universities & Colleges Sport Royal Reception at St James' Palace to celebrate the Centenary Year of British University Sports, hosted by HRH The Princess Royal.
HRH The Princess Royal met with Birkbeck students Nicholas Baker, Sara Hurley, and Nouraiz Nasir, alongside with Kevin Lau, and learnt more about the importance of university sports and how an evening university like Birkbeck enables many students to pursue their professional careers like being in Team GB and still have the opportunity to obtain a University of London degree.
Nicholas Baker, Student Leader, explained to HRH The Princess Royal the opportunities that Birkbeck, University of London gave to students, so they could ble to pursue their professional career while they studied in the evening. Nicholas gave evidence on how many sports athletes choose to study at Birkbeck and so that they can continue to train and represent Team GB.

Birkbeck has a long standing history with sports, where the Birkbeck College Football Club was established in 1895 and the Birkbeck College Cricket Club established in 1832. Students have been able to participate in both local, national and international sports competition, alongside their studies.
Birkbeck currently has 3 dedicated sports teams that compete in the London Universities Sports League. Students are also eligible to take part University of London sports clubs based at Student Central.
