A bit about me...

What is your role?
As Women’s Officer, my job is to make sure that I represent the interests of women on campus. I will do so by advocating for issues that affect us in meetings and liaising with the university and other relevant entities on how to better the experience of Birkbeck students who identify as women.

Tell us a bit about yourself...
I am born and raised in Camden Town and have been passionate about social justice issues for as long as I can remember. I am in my final year at Birkbeck where I study BA in International Law in Spanish and I have a strong interest in human rights both nationally and internationally. I am especially passionate about health inequalities, combatting domestic violence, and other gender-based violence. In my free time, I love to travel, be in nature and take photos.

Why did you run in the elections?
Last year, I was very involved in the Women’s Network and I felt drawn to many of the issues that Katie, the former Women’s Officer, was working on. I want to make a difference here at Birkbeck and make the university experience better for all of us.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself?
I am a sponge for languages and pick them up very quickly! I speak English, French and Spanish fluently, and also understand some Korean, Portuguese, and Darija (North African dialect).

What are your goals for the year?
My manifesto consists of these main points:
• Get Birkbeck to make a maternity policy - most universities have one but Birkbeck don’t. This is unacceptable.
• More events and activities for students - this includes weekly coffee afternoons, craft workshops, outings and so on.
• Bring back the nursery - the uni closed it in 2020 and some students have said they have struggled with finding evening childcare. Something needs to be done.
• Improve safety and security on campus - some have reported feeling unsafe going home at night after lectures. I’m in liaison with Camden council and the university to try and solve this.
