The Students' Union is led by the Elected Officers, who make up the Executive Committee, the working group that shapes the Union. The Officers are elected each year in our Spring Elections, which consists of a cross-campus ballot and any registered student is eligible to vote or stand in the elections.
The Officers are elected on manifestos which highlight the priorities they want to work on throughout the year in Office. During the year, Union staff and Officers work to deliver these priorities and improve the student experience at Birkbeck.
The Union as a whole is directed, managed and governed by the Trustee Board, who delegate the day to day duties to the staff team. Uniquely, students' unions are bodies corporate, membership organisations, employers and also charities where the primary beneficiaries are the members (as students of the College).
REPRESENTATIVES
The work of Birkbeck Students' Union is shaped by its members (that's you!) through the feedback you give us both online and in person through the various forums and council meetings we hold throughout the year. Policy is primarily the result of motions submitted to Student Council and is agreed by your elected representatives, many of whom hold officer positions & head up the relevant campaigns.

STAFF TEAM
Birkbeck Students' Union staff are employed by the Trustees on behalf of the Union, and as such are accountable through the line management structure to the Trustees. Their role is to provide professional support to deliver the work and strategy of the Union. If it helps, imagine that the staff are, in a way, the civil service branch of the Union, supporting the work of the elected representatives.
STUDENTS' UNION TURNAROUND TEAM
In 2015/16 Birkbeck Students' Union engaged the NUS Support Unit to perform a complete diagnostic of our services & procedures so we could grow to meet the changing needs of our evolving membership. At their suggestion, the Trustee board formed a working group comprised of both Students' Union & College representatives. The turn around team is chaired by Ben Ward (CEO Manchester SU) and supported by Al Powell from NUS. Mark Grayling as an expert consultant has been executing the work of the turn around process.
