Birkbeck Students' Union is a registered charity with the Charity Commission of England & Wales (No. 1142614), and has adopted an incorporated company structure that is limited by guarantee under the Companies Act 2006.
For the new academic year of 2018/19, the Students' Union will begin to formalise its funding structure for its Clubs and Societies, to ensure a more transparent and fair appraisal of Clubs and Societies spending. By being open and transparent about how Clubs and Societies receive their funding, we hope many students can understand how the Students' Union spends its money to support student life here at Birkbeck. By being fair on how the Students' Union allocates its financial resources, we hope that many more students may be interested in taking part in joining or starting their own Clubs and Societies.
The basis of allocation of club and society funding is taken within the context of the Students' Union's overall budget and is limited to the funding we have available each year. This means we cannot fund all requests and have to apply a criteria to ensure transparency and fairness across all Birkbeck affiliated Clubs and Societies. In order to do so, we request that Clubs and Societies complete a separate form that is not outlined in their annual grants.
At the start of each academic year, the Student Activities Committee will allocate a small budget for each Club and Society for them to spend on their general activities, as outlined in their activities plan. The allocation of the grant to individual Clubs and Societies are based on the activities that they undergo does not necessarily reflect on the size of its memberships.
Clubs and Societies that wish to obtain a larger grant than they have been initially allocated will have to raise membership contributions.
