All Sports Clubs are provided for by the Students' Union. All current students and staff at Birkbeck are eligible for membership. We also welcome Birkbeck Alumni and other Higher Educational students from other London Universities to join our many Clubs, but that is subject to an approval by the Students' Union Executive Committee.
Since 2015/16, the number of students participating in University sports at Birkbeck has grown exponentially. The success has to be attributed to the Students' Union commitment to improving student experience through the expansion of student clubs and societies, and also the growing demand for sports by Birkbeck students, who help lead and shape the organisation itself.
Here at Birkbeck Students' Union, we constantly seek to increase student engagement in providing as many clubs and societies for everyone. Our Sports Clubs makes one of the largest and active student groups at Birkbeck. The student demographics of all the clubs and societies have shown that members who play come from a wide range of backgrounds from UCAS-entry to being a mature student, full-time to part-time, many students can find the time in their busy schedules to commit to playing a sport amongst their studies, work and other commitments.
For many Birkbeck students, most would have not played a sport after they'd left secondary school, while others may have had a bad experience with the sport. Nevertheless, our Sports Clubs follow an inclusivity policy and other policies that are set by the Students' Union and the College itself, so we welcome all players of all abilities to play or watch our matches, and to enjoy our social events.
In 2015/16, two of our sports teams won their respective competitions against other London universities in the London Universities Sports League (LUSL), a first for Birkbeck! We hope, with the enthusiasm of the Rio Olympics 2016, that more students would take on a sport at Birkbeck. This year 2016/17, we will be offering an even greater variety of sports, ranging from Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Rugby, and Tenpin Bowling. We offer the opportunity to play in recreational and competitive leagues, and we welcome players of all abilities.
The Men's Rugby Club had the most to celebrate in 15/16, by winning the LUSL Rugby Premier League. They'd came first beating Royal Holloway 1st XV, UCL/RUMS 1st XV, and Imperial 1st XV. Their success follows a three year hiatus. Its revival has promoted a culture of a Birkbeck team spirit. The Men's Rugby Club also compete outside of LUSL in the Middlesex Sevens, the largest Sevens tournament in Europe! You can read an article written by the Rugby Club.
