"Welcome to the wonderful world of student activities at Birkbeck! There are so many things that go on here at Birkbeck that student life can never be boring!"

Nicholas Baker, Student Leader (2018)

Getting involved in student activities is a fantastic way to meet new people, learn a new skill, or to simply have fun! Neither evening study nor part-time courses have stopped Birkbeck’s students from creating and running around 20 clubs, societies, working/representative committees and activity groups that - with the union’s support - collectively create hundreds of classes, talks, workshops, trips and events for students each year!

We represent over 20 active Clubs, Societies, and Campaigns which are all student-led and student run.

Students' Union Activities & Events

The Students' Union also holds events that are open to all students, from the Fresher's Fayre right through to end of year socials. Make sure you keep an eye on our events calendar to see what's coming up & register your interest. Alternatively follow us on twitter and FB for updates!

Clubs are mostly student groups which undertake sporting activities. Many of them play competitively in London-wide and national leagues against other universities, but they also offer more casual opportunities for beginners and beyond.

The majority of our student groups are called societies. These vary widely from Academic societies, to Arts or Cultural groups, and many more. The terms 'clubs and societies' are often very interchangeable and simply describe a group.

Campaigns are student-led initiatives which aim to undertake community and outreach work, or raise money for charitable causes. These include groups who volunteer and coordinate activities in the local community.

Becoming a Member

Joining clubs and societies is a great way to supplement your academic experience with extra information, new skills, and networking opportunities; you can also explore extra-curricular interests, enjoy yourself while you keep fit, make new friends and have a lot of fun…

Membership to all clubs and societies is open to all Birkbeck, SOAS, and Amity University, London. In some cases you may need to “trial” (for example: competing activities) to play an active role, but in most cases it’s as simple as signing up through the group's SU page.

Membership fees usually apply, funds are secured by the Students' Union and are always used to help with the running costs of the society you signed up for. Visit the society funding page.

Join a Committee

At the core of every one of our student groups is a committee of dedicated students who plan, promote and execute events and activities for members. If there’s a subject you’re passionate about, or if you’d just like to become more involved, joining a committee is an excellent opportunity to perfect your planning, fundraising, budgeting, marketing and/or leadership skills.

Every club must hold an AGM each year where all students & faculty members can attend and any member can run to be elected by members for any of the committee positions. AGMs are usually in the summer term
